What is Family Practice?

Family practice is a practitioner that can care for the family as a unit. They have been trained to diagnose and treat children through elders. They can see and treat patients ages 1 to 101. Family practice has regular office hours and treats acute and chronic illnesses, performs physicals, immunizations and blood work or x-rays.

What is an Urgent Care Center?

Urgent Care Centers (UCC) are facilities that offer immediate health care for the treatment of acute and chronic health problems and treatment for minor injuries.

So what in the world does that mean? UCC offer treatment for varies illnesses and have convenient hours.  They usually are open for 12 hours a day or have evening hours and open 6-7 days a week. Urgent care does not replace your primary care provider. An urgent care center is a convenient option when someone's regular practitioner is on vacation or unable to offer a timely appointment. Or, when illness strikes outside of regular office hours, UCC offers an alternative to waiting for hours in a hospital Emergency Room. However, UCC‘s are not an emergency room.

What is an advanced practice nurse?

What is an APN? An advance practice nurse is a registered nurse who has achieved their masters or doctorate degree in nursing, obtained advanced clinical training and passed the state board exam. They bring with them their experience of working as a registered nurse and education of diagnosing and treating acute and chronic conditions. An APN will place emphasis not just on cure but care while also concentrating on areas of health promotion, disease prevention and health education.  They focus on the patient as a whole person not just a disease process.

Please don’t call us midlevel providers. APN’s are non-physician practitioners that are trained in various different fields such as: acute care, adult, family, gerontology, neonatal, oncology, pediatric, psychiatric, and women’s health. They can also work in a variety of different settings such as an office, emergency rooms, school, factory, hospital setting, life flight, ambulance and urgent care.  APN’s have the authority to do the following:

  • Order, perform and interpret diagnostic tests such as x-rays and lab work
  • Diagnose and treat acute and chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, injuries and infections
  • Prescribe medications and other forms of treatment
  • Manage a patient’s care needs
  • Refer to specialists
  • In some states, APN’s have admitting privileges with local hospitals if their patient needs admitted
